Online Information for Diabetic Retinopathy - Often a Missed Opportunity for Patient Education

Patients who are more informed are more engaged and involved in their health and medical decision-making, which leads to increased adherence with treatment plans and ultimately better health outcomes.

 

The rapid proliferation of health information on the internet has resulted in more patients turning to the internet as the first source of health-related information. A total of 80% of internet users seek online health information, and 66% of internet users look online for information about a specific disease or medical problem.

 

However, health information for patients should be accurate and thorough, free of commercial biases, and at the appropriate reading level for optimal comprehension and effectiveness.
